Common Causes of Knee Pain and their Treatment

The knee joint is one of the most complicated joints of the human body. It is important to take notice of the fact that the knee region is a complex makeup of ligaments, bones and tendons which work in coordination to allow the knee to move and carry the weight of the body. Besides, it is also one of the most vulnerable areas to injury. The specialist doctors that deal with the joints and muscular-skeletal system are known as Orthopedics.

Common method of Treatment

The Orthopedics used the RICE method as the most common method for the Treatment of Knee Injury. RICE stands for:

R: Rest- It means to not to put any further stress to the injured portion.
I: Ice- Applying ice to control the swelling in the knee area.
C: Compression: To bandage the area tightly but such that it does not cause pain.
E: Elevation: Keeping the knee elevated

There can be a number of serious injuries in the knee too and they require surgery and special treatments. They are discussed below.

Causes of Knee Pain and Types of Injuries

Knee injuries can be caused due to various reasons. Some of the most common movements that lead to Knee Pain or a fully-fledged knee injury can be the following:

1.     Changing direction of the run suddenly.
2.     Falling from a jump.
3.     Sudden slowing down while running.

These movements usually lead to an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Injury. Besides this, any accident, vigorous movement during a sport etc. causes injury which is known as Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL) Injury.

One of the most common yet dreadful of the knee injuries is the meniscus tear or the tearing and rupturing of the ligaments. This injury is caused in the meniscus cartilage which is a rubber like shock absorber in the knee. This type of injury is caused due to direct collision with the knee.

Requirements For Undertaking A Partial Knee Replacement Surgery

The partial knee replacement surgery is a surgery which is undertaken to cure pain in the knee caused by arthritis. It is a bit different from total knee replacement surgery. During this surgery small incisions are made as compared to the total knee replacement surgery. Moreover it has been observed that patients undertaking partial replacement surgery recover at a greater pace.

Some people also call this surgery as minimally-invasive-knee-surgery or “unicompartmental-knee-arthroplasty”. The procedure involved in this is that the damaged or diseased part of the cartilage is removed with artificial components.

This treatment is recommended only for those people who have serious knee arthritis and have already tried the other alternatives. In most of the cases, it is seen that the other treatments do not work on older people (generally above the age of fifty-five). In such cases a knee specialist recommends a knee replacement surgery. There are certain requirements before taking up this surgery-

• The patient should try not to be obsessed.
• The age of the patient should preferably be over 55.
• All the ligaments must be intact so as to undertake this surgery.
• A moderately-sedentary life is expected.

Surgeries are always more expensive than the conservative treatments. For people who have undertaken this surgery, their life has truly become better. They are extensively satisfied with the results of this treatment. There will be no need to take up any more surgeries on that knee again. Therefore, if a knee cannot be cured with knee medicines, then go for partial knee-replacement surgery.
